Dallas Stars vs Detroit Red Wings

Im having a tough time trying to remember the last time the Red Wings lost five straight. Their problems are obvious. They’ve had trouble scoring all year (cashing less than 10% SOG, and just 10.7% of PPs) and now their defense and goal tending has gone south. In current five game skid, they’ve allowed 21 goals while netting just 11 themselves. Dallas has won four of five, three straight, scoring 21 goals times. The Stars are best defensive team in hockey. Key techs here are Stars 6-1 record after four plus goals while Wings are 0-6 after allowing four plus.

Look for Dallas at the best price you can get price!

Orlando Magic vs Utah Jazz

You can put me down on the Utah Jazz -5.5 (-110) for Monday’s NBA Selection. Today the Orlando Magic will be on the road as they take on the Utah Jazz. The Magic have been a solid overall team this season (10-4 record), however, when they are playing on the road they stink. The Magic’s last three losses have been on the road (including getting beat as favorites to the Grizzlies). As for the Jazz, they play spectacular basketball at home. The Jazz are a perfect 7-0 at home this season, and have won those games by an average of double-digits. A big key for the Jazz tonight comes on the offensive end. On the road this season the Magic are only scoring an average 93.2 points per game, while the Jazz are scoring an average of 109 points per game at home. I have no problem laying the points with a Jazz team who is a perfect 7-0 at home, while having only two losses (14-2 record) on the season. Take the Utah Jazz and give up the points!

Northern Arizona Lumberjacks vs San Francisco Dons

Northern Arizona is coming off two straight wins and has some good momentum heading into this game. The Lumberjacks have lost twice this season with those two defeats coming at the hands of Kansas and Arizona so the 28 ppg margin of defeat is no real surprise. Northern Arizona is a good team despite what those games showed. This team is picked to win the Big Sky Conference as it brings back five of its top six scorers from last season. San Francisco has had a similar start to the season, beating the bad teams and losing to the good ones. The Dons are 1-1 on their home floor defeating only D-II Sonoma St. and even that was not a dominating performance. The strength of this team is the backcourt where the top three scorers are on the perimeter including Connecticut transfer Antonio Kellogg. The frontcourt is not nearly as strong and that will hurt against the Lumberjacks who have a balanced inside/outside attack. The Lumberjacks are shooting a solid 48.6 percent from behind the arc and they have one of the best around in Steve Sir, a transfer from San Diego St. who was granted an extra year of eligibility. He alone is hitting 55 percent from three-point land. Forwards Ruben Boykin Jr. and Kyle Landry are tied for second on the team in scoring with 12.2 ppg while they are grabbing a combined 13.6 rpg. The up tempo offense of Northern Arizona is successful because it is deep as 10 players are averaging double digits in minutes. We often have situations where defenses tend to favor the offenses but in this game there is no defensive edge on either side and because of that, the underdog is always the solid play, especially with a big line in this case. Play against favorites that are averaging 76 or more ppg against a team that is allowing 76 or more ppg after playing a game where both teams score 80 points or more. This situation is 25-4 ATS (86.2 percent) over the last five seasons. Look for another cover on Monday.

Take the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks !!

Bookie Bust in New York

New York’s rings bets were handled here, DA says

Local Web hosting firm figures in big bookie bust

An anti-gambling prosecutor in New York has gained a criminal indictment against a Costa Rica Web hosting firm as part of a $3 billion bookmaking sweep.

The company is Digital Solutions S.A. of Sabana Sur, and it is one of three corporate defendants in an indictment made public Wednesday in Queens, New York. Also indicted were 27 individuals who are accused of running a gambling ring in the United States.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said this is the first time that a web designer and an offshore based Internet company have been charged with directly participating in a criminal enterprise. The bookmaking ring accepted more than $3.3 billion in wagers over a 28-month period on a wide variety of sporting events, Brown said.

Digital Solutions is listed as being on the Fifth Floor of the La Colmena building five blocks west of the Contraloria de la República in Sabana Sur. The company provides software to the gambling industry and also provides Web hosting services. A previous address was in Office Centro La Sabana. The firm on its Web site says it was founded in 1997.

The 33-count indictment filed in Queens County Supreme Court charges that the gambling ring promoted illegal sports betting in Queens County and elsewhere and that the defendants were involved with gambling wire rooms in both Miami and overseas. Some 20 of the defendants are also being sued civilly and have been named as respondents in a historic $500 million civil forfeiture action filed in Queens Supreme Court by the District Attorney’s Special Proceedings Bureau, which alleges that they engaged in a criminal enterprise that promoted illegal gambling activities and generated illegal wages.

Digital Solutions S.A., doing business as D.S. Networks, S.A., Inc. also is among the civil defendants.

The firm used the Web site Playwithal.com, which was accessible both online and via an “800″ toll-free telephone number. Although the Web site was maintained in Tampa, Florida, its web servers and wire room terminal were situated outside the United States - on St. Maarten in the Caribbean or, more recently, in Costa Rica, the District Attorney’s Office said. The Web site no longer is active.

Brown, the district attorney, has made arrests of gamblers with Costa Rican connections in the past. And the U.S. federal government has arrested a Costa Rican sportsbook executive who happened to pass through the United States. However, this is the first time the technical infrastructure of a gambling operation figured in an indictment.

From the indictment it appears that all bets originated in the United States.

“The defendants are accused of running a tightly knit and an incredibly lucrative - and illegal - global gambling operation, ” said the district attorney. “It is alleged that they were as savvy and adept in the use of computer technology as they were proficient in the art of secreting and laundering untold millions of dollars in unlawfully earned proceeds through casinos, shell corporations and bank accounts in a variety of locations around the globe, including Central America, the Caribbean, Switzerland, Hong Kong and elsewhere. So massive was the enterprise that only with the assistance of federal law enforcement, police authorities in sister states and other nations have we been able to bring these defendants to justice.”

District Attorney Brown said that the investigation leading to Wednesday’s indictment began in July 2004 when New York Police Department officers assigned to the Queens Major Case Squad and the Queens Narcotics District developed information about an illegal betting ring and began a joint investigation with the District Attorney’s Organized Crime and Rackets Bureau. The investigation included physical surveillance, intelligence information and court-authorized electronic eavesdropping on nearly 30 different telephones and intercepted tens of thousands of conversations. According to the indictment, detectives were able to crack the passwords of key individuals in the gambling ring and follow their day-to-day activities online.

The indictment alleges that the ring used a non-traditional wire room in the form of the offshore, Internet-based gambling service used by bettors and runners to actually place their wagers.

It is alleged that the ring used the offshore wire room to maintain the gambling accounts of numerous runners and bettors through the Internet Web site in an effort to evade law enforcement detection.

Law enforcement crackdowns on traditional mob-run wire rooms have led to the use by illegal gambling rings of off-shore gambling Web sites where action is available around the clock, said officials. Bettors could click on an offshore gambling Web site over the Internet and be assigned individual login codes and passwords. Their wagers and win-loss amounts are recorded in sub-accounts maintained in the accounts of runners and agents. These gambling Web sites typically store their information on computer servers outside the United States - such as in Costa Rica - and “bounce” their data through a series of server nodes in an effort to evade law enforcement, said the District Attorney’s Office.

In carrying out the alleged conspiracy, it is charged that Primary Development, Inc., and its chief executive officer, Maurice Freeman, developed the sports betting Web site www.playwithal.com specifically tailored to meet the needs of James W. Giordano and his son-in-law, Daniel B. Clarin. The Web site - which is literally a computerized betting sheet - is known as “Playwithal Sportsbook.”

In furtherance of the alleged conspiracy, Prolexic Technologies, Inc., allegedly provided security of Playwithal’s Web servers by screening bettors’ Internet protocol addresses to search for viruses or tracking programs that could be used to hack into Playwithal’s servers. Digital Solutions lists Prolexic as a partner. Prolexic has programs to keep hackers out of computer systems.

The indictment charges that Giordano was the bookmaker and boss of the enterprise who controlled and oversaw the entire operation. The indictment further charges that Clarin worked as the controller and was responsible for managing the day-to-day operations and handling bettor disputes and accounting discrepancies, as well as managing account information of the various runners and bettors.

In addition to the criminal charges, a number of search warrants were executed which resulted in the seizure of gambling records, computers and hundreds of millions of dollars in real and personal property, including four Manhattan condos, millions of dollars in cash, tens of thousands of dollars worth of casino chips from the Bellagio in Las Vegas, Nevada,, a rare art collection, jewelry, gold coins, and a football signed by the 1969 championship New York Jets following their victory in Super Bowl III.

The individual ownership of Digital Solutions could not be determined Wednesday night. However, it is among a number of firms here that provide Internet server and wireroom services to bookmakers elsewhere. They have advertised their services in English-language print newspapers.

Still uncertain is what the Queens District Attorney’s Office can do to serve the indictment here because gambling is not a crime in Costa Rica. However, the U.S. government and state officials such as Brown consider that taking a bet from the United States is a crime even if the bookmaker is offshore.

Week 10 NFL Power Rankings

Week 10 NFL Power Rankings

1 (1) Indianapolis Colts (8-0) Absolutely dominated the Patriots - so there’s only one question about the Colts: Can they be beaten? I don’t think it can be done. With their newfound defense this team may very well be invincible. We could be looking at the next dynasty, as there are only three or four teams in the league that come close to the completeness that the Colts have.

2 (3) Seattle Seahawks (6-2) They had no problem beating the Cardinals, although that isn’t saying much. This week they have a pivotal game against the St. Louis Rams, and a win by the Seahawks would all but lock up first place in the NFC West.

3 (4) Cincinnati Bengals (7-2) One of the few teams in the league that matches up against Indianapolis, one of the very few that has a legitimate chance to actually beat them. However, they’ll struggle due to their lack of big game experience. Soon though…

4 (8) Denver Broncos (6-2) Leading the division in the AFC West is no small task, and the Broncos deserve it. They’ve played well for the majority of the season, and like the Bengals have a chance at stopping the Colts. However, they need to shore up their pass defense to stand a chance.

5 (10) New York Giants (6-2) They beat the 49ers when they were on cruise control, and they should have a similar experience against the Minnesota Vikings. Eli Manning could very easily take this team to the Super Bowl - they have the talent in the weak NFC.

6 (9) Carolina Panthers (6-2) Is Carolina that good, or is Tampa Bay really that bad? The Panthers had a pretty easy time, stacking eight guys in the box and forcing Chris Simms to beat them with his arm - which he couldn’t do. Carolina is poised to make some noise this year, and could return to the Super Bowl.

7 (6) San Diego Chargers (5-4) They had a harder time against the Jets than they should’ve, but they did win. They will have to be better than that if they want to stay in the playoff race. Fortunately they have a bye-week coming up to work on those things that are lacking.

8 (2) Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2) They won - so why the drop? The reason: the absence of Big Ben. Until Ben Roethlisberger gets healthy, the Steelers are not an elite team. A very good team, yes, but not an elite team.

9 (7) Atlanta Falcons (6-2) They let the Dolphins hang around in the 4th quarter, but still came away with the win. They shouldn’t have many problems with Green Bay, but after that they’ve got Tampa Bay, and if Chris Simms has found his arm, the Bucs could give them some problems.

10 (5) Dallas Cowboys (5-3) A terrible week in practice dropped the Cowboys five spots - actually, the drop is due to other teams playing well and passing the Cowboys, rather than bad practices. They have a huge game coming up against Philadelphia on Monday Night - a win here would almost knock the Eagles out of the divisional race.

11 (12) Jacksonville Jaguars (5-3) Only beat the Texans by a touchdown - they’re going to need to play much better to have similar success against the Baltimore Ravens this week.

12 (13) Chicago Bears (5-3) Chicago could be the spoiler in the playoffs. They have the defense, and the offense is slowly coming together. If it every gets on track, this team will be dangerous. This week against the 49ers is just another opportunity for them to cement the NFC North title.

13 (11) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-3) Until Chris Simms proves he can win games, Tampa Bay is going to continue their freefall. You have to have a somewhat balanced offense to win games in the NFL, and Cadillac Williams can’t do it all. The defense is still there though.

14 (19) Washington Redskins (5-3) It wasn’t pretty, but a victory over Philadelphia has to count for something. They looked a lot better in an ugly win than the 36-0 loss to the Giants. They’ll need to be better to catch the Giants though.

15 (18) Kansas City Chiefs (5-3) A brilliant call by Dick Vermeil gave the Chiefs a much needed win over the Raiders. They shouldn’t have too much trouble against the Buffalo Bills this week… and they better hope they don’t, otherwise the Broncos will continue to slip away with the division.

16 (17) Oakland Raiders (3-5) After last week’s game against the Chiefs this team does look like a playoff caliber team. It may be a case of too little too late though.

17 (14) Miami Dolphins (3-5) They look like a shadow of the team they were when they handled Denver at the start of the season. They hung around against the Falcons, but just couldn’t pull it off. Things might be getting worse, as the New England Patriots are coming to town.

18 (15) New England Patriots (4-4) Well, the good news is they’re playing in a fairly weak division this year. Which team do you think is better than them? Buffalo? Miami? No, not yet. Their defense must be improved for them to go for that third straight Super Bowl, but don’t count on it.

19 (16) Philadelphia Eagles (4-4) Fresh off a loss against the Redskins, the Eagles have to face the Cowboys on Monday Night Football - minus Terrell Owens. This game has so many storylines - have the Eagles lost their season? Can they win without Terrell Owens? Who will step up to fill the void?

20 (20) Tennessee Titans (2-7) They’ve been competitive in almost all of their games, but they just can’t buy a break. They’ve got a week off coming up, maybe they’ll be able to salvage something. One thing is for sure - the Titans aren’t going to make the playoffs.

21 (21) Detroit Lions (3-5) Hammered by the Vikings of all teams, that’s not good. Will they show any signs of life against the Cardinals this week?

22 (23) St. Louis Rams (4-4) They had the bye-week leading into what may turn out to be the most important game of the year for the Rams - the game against the Seahawks. If they lose they are essentially four games back, if they win, they’re back by one.

23 (24) Buffalo Bills (3-5) Did the bye-week give the Bills enough time to prepare for the Chiefs, and keep the slim chance of winning the division alive? Doubtful, at best.

24 (22) Baltimore Ravens (2-6) This offense can’t do anything. Not just their passing game, but their running game as well. These last eight games may be Kyle Boller’s last chance to show that he belongs in the NFL.

25 (28) Cleveland Browns (3-5) They won against the Titans, but asking for a win in Pittsburgh - even when they’re without Big Ben, is way too much. It’s not going to happen.

26 (27) New York Jets (2-6) They almost - ALMOST - were able to pull off the upset against the Chargers. In the NFL, though, almost isn’t good enough. They’ll need to play perfectly to keep pace with the Carolina Panthers this week.

27 (25) Green Bay Packers (1-7) This just in - Brett Favre can’t do it all. He needs to have some form of a team around him, and the Packers management are just realizing that. It’ll be disappointing if he goes out like this.

28 (29) New Orleans Saints (2-7) They kept pushing against the Bears, but that defense just wouldn’t give. They’ll finally get a chance to catch their breath this week, giving them time to reflect on the disaster this season has become. Everything that can go wrong - will.

29 (26) Arizona Cardinals (2-6) Will the real quarterback please stand up? This team lacks a leader, among other things. Until they find one, they’re doomed to be a laughingstock.

30 (31) Minnesota Vikings (3-5) Oh joy they get to go and play one of the best teams in the NFC. Well, as long as they take the plane there and not a cruise ship.

31 (32) Houston Texans (1-7) They kept pace with the Jaguars, but in the end it just wasn’t enough. Traveling to Indianapolis this week is not going to be pretty. I’ll be surprised if they stay within 14.

32 (30) San Francisco 49ers (2-6) They were out of the basement for a week, but after being dominated by the Giants, they’re right back in it. They have a shot against the Bears, but don’t put money on it.

Syracuse vs South Florida

USF is 6-3 this year after last Saturday’s 22-12 home win over Pitt, giving USF a 4-1 home mark this year (its lone loss coming to unbeaten Rutgers, 22-20, on a failed two-point conversion). QB Matt Grothe is the team’s offensive star, leading a balanced offense that averages 159.4 YPG rushing (4.3 YPC) and 201.9 YPG passing. He’s not only completing 63.5% of his passes but he’s also the team’s leading rusher with 533 YR (4.3 YPC / eight TDs). USF’s defense is excellent, allowing just 17 PPG (26th in the nation). That bodes well against Syracuse, as the Orangemen are 0-4 in Big East play this year, averaging just 11 PPG. Syracuse is way better than LY’s 1-10 team at 3-6 and an impressive 7-2 ATS, but the matchup is not good for them here. Syracuse can’t run the ball (102.4 YPG and 3.0 YPC), meaning QB Perry Patterson will have to throw. While Patterson is greatly improved this year, the USF pass D ranks seventh in the nation in pass efficiency, allowing just 51.6% completions with five TDs and 12 INTs. This is USF’s final home game of 2006 and the team has won EIGHT of its last 10 home games going back to the start of 2005.

Lay the points with South Florida!!

Minnesota vs Michigan State

I’ll place my balance on Michigan State +1.5 for this Saturday’s College Football Selection. Minnesota will be on the road as they take on Michigan State. Michigan State with the points is defintley the play!! Don’t be fooled by Minnesota’s dominating win last Saturday against Indiana. Before that win, Minnesota was on a 1-5 run (their only win was at home by one single point against Div. I-AA North Dakota State). Now Minnesota finds themselves on the road (1-5 on the road this season - ever since winning their road opener they are 0-4 SU & ATS, being outscored 161-50). Expect them to struggle this Saturday against a highly motivated Michigan State. Keep in mind that a win in their next two games will make them bowl eligible. QB Drew Stantonlooks to lead a perfect revenge game for Michigan State who got beat at the Metrodome last season by this same Minnesota team. Michigan State has a huge home crowd giving them an even bigger edge against a poor Minnesota team this weekend.

Take Michigan State plus the points!

WASHINGTON (+3) vs. DALLAS

Im not to pumped on the idea of awarding Tony Romo as the Supreme Overlord of Humanity. This is a rivalry game, and the  Redskins have had two weeks to prepare for a contest played in front of their home crowd. Their defense has undergone a restoration and they still harbor the desperate dreams of a play-off run. They’re ready!!

Take the Points!!

Cincinnati +3 vs. Baltimore Sunday 1:00 pm CBS

Thia looks to be a critical game that is to be played in the AFC North this Sunday when the Ravens host the Bengals. Cinci trails the Ravens by one game in the standings and this game means more to them than anything. The Bengals have a strong run and pass game that is a step up from Baltimore, who have been struggling to move the football on offense. The Bengals have beaten Baltimore the last three meetings and will have no problem extending that winning streak to four games.

Cincinnati 17, Baltimore 14.

Ohio State vs Illinois

Ohio State minus the points over Illinois at 3:30 ET is the play. Troy Smith has been the best player in college football this season (22 TD/2 INT) and against a marginal Illinois team, he’ll have a field day. The Buckeyes have a ballhawking defense that is going to make young, mistake-prone QB Juice Williams life difficult. OSU is 7-1 ATS with their only loss coming when they were favored by 37 and won by only 28. The Buckeyes have been dominant on both sides of the ball and will slap Illininois around today. I say take OSU MINUS THE POINTS.
